Bear Tree Records opened in October 2015.
After working for Selectadisc, Jacks and Record Collector for various years the time had come to do it alone and in my own way, and it very much started as a one man operation, in the smallest unit I could find... You could probably fit 5 people in the shop comfortably. Four and a half years on, Bear Tree is now a three person operation and in our third location. The largest retail unit in The Forum, which has a long history of being a hub for independent shops.
We have a large selection of stock across many genres from jazz to black metal, indie to avant garde and pretty much everything in between. In our current space we've hosted in-store events with Richard Dawson, JME, Drenge, Reverend and the Makers, Fat White Family, The Big Moon, Jade Bird and many more, as well as doing events outside the shop with Richard Hawley and Bring Me The Horizon. The shop has become a community for many who pass through each week to pick up new releases or browse our small second hand section.
In March 2020 like every other record shop in the UK, we closed our doors. We piled a few boxes of stock in an Uber and took it back home and have been operating mailorder only from my house since. Space is tight, records are everywhere, but the support we've recieved has been nothing short of incredible. We're moving forwards day by day and it's working well so far. The future remains uncertain, with what reopening a record shop will be like, in the current world we're living in, but we'll get there and operate however is safest for both ourselves and our great customers.
Thanks to all our customers, distributors, and friends for the ongoing support so far!
